Agamemnon is an excellent example for today’s essay: Justice and revenge. What is Justice? Justice is basically repaying someone for their actions to someone else. In the Batman storyline, Batman is the main guy who shows everyone what justice is, even though he does it totally wrong. Batman’s philosophy is that killing someone else is wrong, without at least giving them a chance in court, even Joker, his nemesis. However, the Joker ends up killing hundreds of people and attempting to kill more everytime he gets put in jail, because, as horrible as the Joker is, he is very smart.
Most people don’t think of him this way, but Batman is the main reason that everyone who gets killed is killed. So back to the question, what is Revenge? Revenge is angrily paying back someone for a deed they did to you. So Justice and revenge are the same thing, right? WRONG! Agamemnon killed Clytemnestra’s daughter in the Aeschylus play Agamemnon, so Clytemnestra killed Agamemnon with a war axe. Was justice portrayed in this, or revenge? Well, it was a bit of both. Yes, Agamemnon deserved to die, but Clytemnestra didn’t kill him because he deserved to die, She killed him because she was angry at what he had done and wanted to pay him back. So, even though Agamemnon did deserve to die, Clytemnestra killed him for the wrong reason.
