Though king over the same nation, David and Saul were very different. They made different choices, had different influences on Israel, and treated each other differently. David treated Saul as if he were Saul's servant. Saul was usually trying to kill David out of Jealousy of the things he did (Like killing Goliath the Giant).

They were also different types of people, for better or for worse.

He started out as a shepherd, but did many things in the name of The Lord, and worked his way up to being King over all Israel. He was very honest, not thinking about things in the long run, but what could currently benefit Israel and the actions that needed to be taken. He was a kind and firm leader, who you could almost always find doing the right thing. 1st and 2nd Samuel mentions him as "A man after God's own heart." He brought Israel to the summit and Israel's enemies to their knees. Then we have Saul.

Unlike David, Saul tended to paranoid and insecure of everything. God would give him advice, but he lost this blessing when he deliberately disobeyed God. Saul would continuously try to kill David, but each of these attacks would get shot down like a zeppelin flying over 30 artillery squads.. David's life ended after a long, successful rule, praising God. Saul died after a battle that he fell on his own sword. Saul and David were different characters with different influences on the world.
