If Dr. Faustus's strategy to stop the planet's rotations so that he could repent had worked, would he repent? Dr. Faustus is a fictional character from the Christopher Marlowe play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, who traded his soul in for 24 years of pleasure and being a master of the dark arts. In his final hour before he was shredded to bits by demons and sent to Hell, he tried to stop the planets rotating so that time would technically freeze, and he would have time to repent of his sins. However, at this point his powers of sorcery had grown weaker and weaker to the point where they disappeared when he attempted this huge spell. The question still remains: Would he have repented if his magic worked, and time stopped?

No, he wouldn't. The whole story is about him denying repentance at every opportunity, and if he could freeze time, he would continue down his road to sorcery forever. It's sort of like you get addicted to the cookies in the cookie jar in the kitchen. You have plenty of time to stop eating one every night, but you don't want to. You also know that when the jar is empty, your parents will find out and belt you. But you don't want to stop. The cookies are good! So, eventually the jar is empty, and your luck is out. Do you wish you hadn't eaten all those cookies? Of course you do. Would you eat more if the jar got refilled and nobody found out you ate the first batch?

Of course you would.
