The world was in considerable danger in the 1960s-the 1970s. First of all, there was the Vietnam war. You were in danger of being drafted if you were a young adult male, and if you did get drafted, it was DEFINITELY a dangerous assignment. You were sent into a foreign country with guerrilla fighters, enemy snipers, machine gun nests, helicopters, swamps, mosquitos, diseases you haven't built up an immunity to yet, huge phycological damage, smoking and drinking habits, and very high injury rates. On top of all that, America were pretty much the bad guys, with the Vietnamese just defending their country.

The cold war was also going on at the time, meaning high tensions between America and Russia, the world's two most dangerous countries. Nuclear missiles were pointed towards both countries, and war could break out at any time. The Korean wars had just ended, which raised tensions even higher between America and Russia, as Russia had given North Korea 150 T-34 tanks and 350 planes to fight the Americans.

The 1960s and 70s were not exactly safe.
