Odysseus and Euryclea had a very strong relationship in The Odyssey, which aided him in his journey.
Odysseus is the main character of this story, a cool, calculating fellow who has an awesome beard and drew the wrath of Poseidon. Euryclea is basically his very old nurse. She tended to him when he was a baby, and continued to serve him by tending to his son as a baby (wow, that’s a lot of years of service, considering Telemachus, his son, is about twenty, and Odysseus is around 45). When he was in his beggar costume, she was the only one, other than his dog, who recognized him almost right away. Why is that? Well, he had a long scar on his foot from a fight with a boar (the boar ended up with a spear through the head, you don’t mess with Odysseus and get away unscathed), and upon seeing it, Euryclea recognized him and was happy that Odysseus wasn’t dead (as you can imagine). So the fact that she recognized him before anyone else (Including his wife) means that she obviously had a strong bond with him.
Euryclea obviously knew him very well, seeing that she recognized him by a scar on his foot when she hadn’t seen him in about 15 years. Euryclea and Odysseus had known each other for a very long time, and that ended up helping Odysseus on his mission to kill the suitors. Because of her strong bond and loyalty to Odysseus, she probably helped while he was strategizing to win the battle against the suitors.(Man, even after Odysseus and his son grew up, she was still serving the family. That’s definitely a grade-A servant right there.) As a conclusion to my essay, Odysseus and Euryclea had a strong bond that ended up helping him on his journey.
