THE SCREW-CUTTING LATHE

Writer's picture: Dalton MorrisonDalton Morrison

A screw-cutting lathe is a machine (specifically, a lathe) capable of cutting very accurate screw threads. It uses a process of guiding the linear motion of the tool bit in a precisely known rate to the rotating motion of the workpiece.  Screws are simple machines that provide a mechanical advantage (They help us build things very easily). Screws are so common we take them for granted, like air and food.

So, who invented screws? Well, they were actually first used by Archimedes, who used them for extracting water from the ground, or lifting water.

The machine made for building them, however, was made by an innovator named Henry Maudslay. His machine involved rotating a basic metal shape of a nail into a cutting knife, which sliced and gouged the screw into form. The new machine tool cut screws with high precision, and It made it much easier to make screws. Before the machine, people would have to hand-carve them out of wood or iron, which was slow, expensive, and highly dependent on the carver. This made nails have poor quality and cost a lot.

Mandslay's entrepreneurship and marketing helped his machine become successful, and he went into business for himself. They caught on quickly, and they gave us something that we developed before England. By 1810 Maudslay was employing eighty workers and running out of room at his workshop, so he moved to larger premises. Maudslay also recruited a promising young Admiralty draughtsman, Joshua Field, who proved to be so talented that Maudslay took him into partnership. The company later became Maudslay, Sons and Field when Maudslay’s sons became partners.

As a conclusion to this essay, the screw cutting lathe is very, very helpful to today's businesses, architecture, war machines, buildings, and many more.
