Harry Brown's Approach to Selling

Writer's picture: Dalton MorrisonDalton Morrison
Most salesmen tend to not really care about your opinion and bug you into buying something. But is this really the right way to sell? No, this is the entirely wrong approach to selling something. The more you push a person, the less they want to buy your product, especially if you have the wrong attitude with it.

What you want to do is be a friendly person who listens to the other person's opinion, so they let their guard down and just buy it. You want to be honest, sincere, and careful when you are selling a product.

So, how do you do this without stumbling into a dead end in your point and the buyer walking away? Simple: you start up a friendly conversation, and find out what the other person values about products. If they like cheap products, point out how cheap the product is, if they like products that can be used for a while, point out how your spatula you're selling would take a long time to wear out, etc, etc.

As a conclusion to this essay, when selling, be the person you would buy something from. Be friendly, warm, and considerate. Listen to what they have to say (Even if you couldn't care less what they think, just do it).

That is how the economy used to function, but the government causes inflation, leaving entrepreneurs with that exact predicament. Take gas prices for example, the government raises gas prices, now suddenly people being their own boss can no longer afford to have their prices so low, however it still works somewhat in their favor because every other salesman has to do the same, leaving consumers without any money at all. This happens with taxes, the rise of minimum wage, and many other government controlled things. It is a real problem new entrepreneurs have to learn how to overcome.

(Extra Credit question): So, everyone, if the producers want to please the consumers with low prices, how do you explain inflation being so high?

Some businesses that are so influential, that consumers cannot go without their products, know that they have the power. They can jack up the prices on their products. Other businesses then follow suit in order to stay afloat.
