The Backstaff

My favorite invention from this week is the Backstaff. Why, you ask? Well, it was far more useful than most inventions being made in the 1500s, and this is why: It gave an excellent replacement for the Mariner’s astrolabe, a widely known and used instrument. It was better because to use the Mariner’s astrolabe, you had to look directly at the sun. Ouch. That would hurt, to stare at the sun for thirty seconds every time you had to tell where you were going out on the ocean. So, what was the world before it? Well, portugal and spain were the dominant owners in the 1500s, and after the 100's year war, England was way behind them. However, Queen Elizabeth had a plan.

The plan was to train a bunch of men to steal supplies from the neighboring rich countries. So she trained pirates.

So, Now we know all that "The sun never sets on the British empire is a bunch of "malarkey". That explains everything, doesn't it, no wonder they're so rich now, they got a head start by hiring pirates! If that's not a shady history I don't know what is! Well, those pirates needed to navigate, I suppose, so they invented the backstaff. It also was far more accurate, certainly more easy to use, and more durable. That being said, the Backstaff was an important push in Naval exploration and navigation science, because instead of it having one of those drawbacks or sacrifices we so commonly see in innovations, it was convenient in many ways with not a single drawback. Pip Pip cheerio, everyone!
